About Scientia

A breeding programme shaped by a scientist's habits,  curiosity, evidence and revision and by a lifelong fascination with horses.

Founder Narrative

Jo Santini 6 (1).jpg

Scientia Sport Horses was founded by Professor Joanne Santini, a microbiologist whose research career has centred on understanding complex biological systems and microbial communities.

The fascination with animals came much earlier. Growing up in suburban Melbourne, Joanne kept and bred animals from childhood, including breeding canaries from the age of eight. Horses remained a fascination long before they became part of daily life.

Microbiology eventually offered an unexpected framework for thinking about breeding. Complex outcomes rarely come from one variable. Genes interact with development and environment. Microbial communities behave as systems. Evidence changes as more data appears.

Those habits translate naturally to horses: ask what is known, identify what is assumed, keep records, seek the right expertise, test decisions against outcomes and change course when the evidence changes.

Science is a method, not a claim to know everything

Being a scientist does not make someone automatically expert in every aspect of horse breeding, veterinary medicine, farriery or training.

For Scientia, a scientific mindset means recognising those boundaries and using the right expertise. Veterinary, reproductive, farriery, breeding, assessment and professional riding input are part of the programme rather than replaced by it.

Scientia Sport Horses does not set out to breed horses for a generic market.

The aim is to breed animals that are physiologically and psychologically sound. Horses with stamina, durability, and the temperament to reach their potential.

That means finding the right owner for each individual horse, not the other way around. We take into account the character and ability of each youngster, and match accordingly.

If you are looking for a horse with a known history, a science-led upbringing, and a breeder who remains genuinely interested in how the story continues, we would love to hear from you.

Scientia Sport Horses, knowledge, welfare, and horses, in that order of importance to no one but equal in practice.

There are currently no Scientia horses publicly offered for sale.

If you are interested in future youngstock or foals, please register an enquiry. We are happy to speak with serious prospective homes before a horse is formally advertised.

Finding the right home

Why Scientia exists

Scientia is deliberately small.

The ambition is not to produce the greatest number of foals. It is to produce a limited number of horses whose breeding decisions can be explained, whose development can be followed properly and whose welfare does not become collateral to commercial pressure.

If the programme succeeds, the proof will not be the philosophy written on this website. It will be the horses.
